Although the headlamp is fantastic, per my original review below, the battery cover wasn't very durable. The battery cover broke after 1 to 2 years of reading use at home; what was surprising was that I only changed the batteries 3 to 4 times prior to it breaking....the good news is that one can tape shut the battery compartment, and it still works (as I have been doing for years).

This is a fantastic headlamp. Besides this headlamp, I also own the Black Diamond Zenix IQ. However, I find myself using the Gizmo 99% of the time however. The reasons I prefer the Gizmo are as follows:
the Gizmo weighs significantly less than the Zenix IQ
unlike the Zenix IQ, the Gizmo does *not* have a battery pack in the back of the strap....making the Gizmo perfect for use as a reading lamp while laying in bed.
the Gizmo is more compact (and lighter), making it easier to carry in a pocket and/or to carry with you in a backpack for "just in case I need a headlamp" situations.
Although I would still recommend the Zenix IQ as a great headlamp for long hikes (provides more output light when you really need to see distances for unknown terrain), I find that I use my Gizmo 99% of the time because in its low-output mode it is the perfect reading lamp and in its high-output mode it provides plenty of light for walking around a campsite, etc.

I got this because I wanted a lightweight headlamp for running after dark and to take backpacking/canoeing and other places where weight counts. I have some Black Diamond climbing equipment and their headlamps all got great reviews too, so I went with this one. As soon as I opened it I decided the design is great. Very compact, just big enough to squeeze in a couple AA batteries right behind the 3 LEDs. The elastic headband is small and won't absorb much sweat, but it's quite strong with a lot of stretch and I have to loosen it up quite a bit or I'd probably get indentations in my head!
On my first run, I like the way the three LEDs lighted up a swath ahead of me, not just one bright focused beam. This well-designed headlamp constructed of very lightweight, very flexible, very strong plastic. All around great product, especially for the price!

Oftentimes you get what you pay for (though there's expensive junk as well as cheap junk!)
1) This headlamp eats batteries even when it sits unused, which is a hidden cost of any supposedly "cheap" headlamps, which aren't either cheap or reliable in the long run.
2) I'm unhappy with the switch it's hard to tell if it's activating sometimes.
3) This headlamp goes on the brightest setting first. If the batteries are running low it will switch itself off entirely before you can click through fast enough to the lower settings. It would make more sense to start with the less bright settings first, which both my Brunton headlamp and Mammut TR1 do.
4) It's way too difficult to get the back off the case to replace the batteries without a knife or other tool even in broad daylight. None of my other three headlamps has this problem. In practice I have to pry one of the hinges first to separate the headlamp from the holder that attaches it to the headband, then get the case open. Neither step is easy without a knife blade or similar tool, and sometimes it seems like I'm going to break the headlamp in the process. If you need to replace the batteries after dark and don't have another light, forget it. I had fresh batteries in my tent but after wrestling with the case in the dark for what seemed like 10-15 minutes, had to wait til the next morning to switch them out. (I now carry a tiny Princeton Tec Pulsar II for a backup in situations like this)
I occasionally go on weeklong backpacking trips and when I take only one (or two) lights I need something truly reliable. This isn't it. After one such trip I swore I'd never take this headlamp anywhere I really needed to depend on it. After three headlamps that had similar problems with iffy switches and no juice left in the batteries when you need it, I recently spent the money on a ZebraLight H51 http://www.amazon.com/H51W/dp/B005LYS7OG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1344820876 I got Sanyo enerloop batteries to go with it. The zebralight is everything my previous three headlamps were not (Brunton, Black Diamond and Mammut). Metal construction where the others use plastic, yet doesn't weigh any more. Night and day difference on the switch! Very good tactile feedback on the switch, feels like it would hold up to 10,000 clicks instead of wearing out after a few hundred times. They thought of everything. Quick click and it comes on bright. Click and release more slowly and it comes on low so you don't blind your tentmate. And all kinds of other click settings (medium, strobe, etc.) that are intuitive and not hard to learn or remember. Zebralight supposedly sets the world record for longest run time on a single AA battery. I was thankful for the glow-in-the-dark silicone holder every time I looked for it in a tent after dark. And what I've now come to appreciate, you can slightly unscrew the tailcap to eliminate the parasitic battery drain that plagues all of my past three headlamps including the Black Diamond Gizmo. Finally, a headlamp I can trust when I really depend on it, and will work immediately when I grab it. Reviews I read of the $50-$60 headlamps by brands like Black Diamond and Mammut did not inspire me with a lot of confidence either, so "you get what you pay for" is not always a good guide either. Read the zebralight reviews and compare to the others I'm convinced it's actually the cheapest headlamp if you plan to still be using it 4-5 years from now. IMO there's no comparison in the build quality even in the same price range.
Best Deals for Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp
So this is just an average run of the mill headlamp that does everything you need it to do while keeping it light weight and simple. I have loaned it out to young children who immediately know how to use it in under a minute and seem to enjoy the 'blinking' mode. This headlamp is nothing special, but doesn't try to be, it just gets the job done while keeping the cost low to the consumer. I couldn't be happier with mine and plan to keep using it for years to come.

This arrived a little early, one day before I left for Belize and Guatemala! I looked at sharks in the atoll lagoon at night, walked to the outhouse, cooked in a water cabin on open flame hot plate, washed dishes on the shore and avoided stepping on thousands of hermit crabs with this handy, affordable and durable little headlamp! Great lighting for a small and inexpensive LED lamp.

A good little light. I mounted it on my small electric scooter as a secondary light for its flashing mode. The Chili color even matches my scooter. I used a Dorcy 41-2090 3AAA G Shock LED Headlight as my primary headlight. Between the two people definitely see me coming. Both lights are quality build and I spent a total of $35 for both.
